Chiropractor Port Melbourne states:
"As a chiropractor the issue of safety is one that is raised often. It is unfortunate that chiropractic has in some people's minds developed a reputation of being unsafe when in actual fact it is one of the safest professions around. To confirm this you need look no further than the insurance premiums paid by chiropractors. Compared to other professions working on the spine and nervous system they are extremely low. So either the insurance companies are putting chiropractic before profits, or it is very safe. I think we all know the answer to that one.
In fact a New Zealand government inquiry found that chiropractic care is "remarkably safe". In relation to caring forneck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. So whilst all forms of therapy have some risks, chiropractic has a very good track record over many years.
While some reports have attempted to associate chiropractic neck adjustments with an occurrence of a particular kind of stroke (vertebral artery dissection), research conducted in 2008 in the journal Spine explained that patients about to have a stroke often have neck pain and headaches, resulting in them visiting their chiropractor or medical doctor. The research showed the patients were just as likely to have a stroke after a visit to the medical doctor as they were after a chiropractic visit. In other words it was the stroke symptoms that caused the visit to the Doctor or chiropractor rather than the Doctor or chiropractor causing the stroke.
Chiropractors spend a minimum of five years at university studying subjects such as anatomy, diagnosis, neurology and pathology, as well as ongoing education once graduated. Chiropractic adjustments are safe, gentle and effective for people of all ages and provide a natural approach to better health.
